Wax Houston Concert reviews
Shredders
"In the end, it didn't much matter. Wax, like his idol, Jimi Hendrix, creates non-guitar-like sounds on his axe - a shredder of a different breed. Steve Vai, once Wax's pupil on Long Island, is an out-and-out no-holds-barred classic shredder - like Eddie Van Halen and RItchie Blackmore before him. While Vai is not beyond Van Halen in his remarkable techniques, he's certainly standing on the shoulders of the aforementioned giants. As such, both men appeal to the people who value "musician's music," and each stands alone in his own right. Like Blackmore redefined play with Deep Purple but even more so with Rainbow in the 1970s, Van Halen creating a dizzying approach to the instrument that might be a step beyond what Blackmore achieved. Where Wax does things that you can't anticipate, sounds that don't seem to be coming from his array of guitars. As master and apprentice, it made sense for Wax to follow Vai - one could have easily argued for the other sequence."
